Uplift San Bernardino
Student Site Assessment Trainee
The Making Hope Happen Foundation is seeking five individuals to participate as the Uplift San Bernardino Student Site Assessment Trainees. Each student will work a total of 520 hours or approximately 6.5 hours per week for 52 weeks.
Increased adoption of zero emission vehicles like EVs, electric buses and electric forklifts is critical for improving the air quality and economic vitality of the Inland Empire. Millions of dollars from the federal and state government are being spent on increasing the number of electric vehicles and chargers to achieve climate goals. These new industries are creating thousands of new job opportunities for construction workers, CAD designers, electricians, software programmers and technicians.
Communities such as the City of San Bernardino and Muscoy have long been under-represented in numbers of electric vehicles, EV chargers, and clean tech employment. The path to reversing that starts with educating the community about the benefits and affordability of EVs as well as incentives available to reduce the cost. Then the City needs a charging infrastructure network so residents of the City of San Bernardino and Muscoy feel comfortable driving an EV. Finally students and young adults in San Bernardino and Muscoy need to be trained for careers and well paying jobs in this industry.
The Making Hope Happen Foundation received a grant from the California Air Resources Board to help achieve these goals by:
- Training students and young adults to conduct outreach to community members about EVs and EV incentives
- training students and young adults to identify homes, apartment buildings and public parking areas suitable for installing EV charging and perform initial site visits
- Educating students and young adults about career opportunities in transportation electrification
Student workers will receive 10 hours of paid training about electric vehicles and charging stations before starting work. Students will receive another 20 hours of training on how to do preliminary site assessments for the installation of EV charging stations. Following the training, they will work with an electrician or site evaluator to conduct site assessments at homes of San Bernardino residents who are interested in buying an EV. The site assessments will look at factors such as the distance from the parking area to the electrical panels and meters, the parking space assignment, the utility metering configuration, the availability of guest parking spaces or a “house meter” and the electrical capacity of the parking area. Sites will be identified through the project’s community outreach process.
